Encounter Inquiry API
Member Encounter Inquiry API: Cambia's business partners access this API to retrieve member/patient encounter data. This API is implmented using the public HAPI FHIR 2.2 library based on STU3 1.8.0 version. This API is deployed on the AWS Cloud and uses RDS MySQL as the persistence store for the FHIR repository. HL7 V2.5.1 ADT messages are ingested from several clinical clearinghouses, transformed into FHIR Encounter resources and loaded into the FHIR repository.

Role-Based Access Control FHIR Extension to Define and Enforce Security Policies on FHIR Resources for a Concussion Tracking mHealth Application Integrated with OpenEMR via FHIR
This project extends HAPI FHIR reference library with role-based access control on the CRUD APIs of FHIR Resources that are integrated with a Concussion Tracking mHealth Application that interacts with a FHIR interface to OpenEMR using resources Patient, Condition, Encounter, EpisodeOfCare, Observation, and CarePlan. Specifically, the InterceptorAdapter of HAPI FHIR is extended with a new interceptor class (AccessControlInterceptor) to support: definition of permissions on user by role to a subset of CRUD methods for each FHIR resource; and, enforcement of permissions that limit the authorized services to be executed by a user/role combination for access to allowed FHIR resources. A FHIR-based Approach to Chemotherapy Order Templates
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®), a not-for-profit alliance of 27 of the world's leading cancer centers devoted to patient care, research, and education, is dedicated to improving the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of cancer care so that patients can live better lives. NCCN Chemotherapy Order Templates (NCCN Templates ®) is a compilation of information based on the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines ®) and the NCCN Drugs & Biologics Compendium (NCCN Compendium ®). The NCCN Templates include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, supportive care agents, monitoring parameters, and safety instructions. One of the challenges we have been faced with is making this information shareable, consumable and executable. With the understanding of what FHIR holds for the future, we have worked with our IT partners at IBM to implement FHIR architecture (using the PlanDefinition resource: http://build.fhir.org/plandefinition-example-kdn5-simplified.html) into our NCCN Template software, to help our information to be better integrated into our EHR vendors' systems. Our vision is to lead the oncology effort at HL7/FHIR, and with these first steps would like to share at the conference what we have accomplished, the challenges and the successes of this work. Developed by DUHS in collaboration with MedAppTech, Duke Pillbox improves self-management through patient learning, communication and user-satisfaction outcomes in hospital, clinic and home settings. Vibrent Health: S4S – FHIR Application to connect Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) to EHRs
Sync 4 Science (S4S) program will allow individuals to access their health data and send it to researchers. The pilot program will build off existing community standards and specification efforts (e.g., FHIR, SMART Health IT, Argonaut, CMS EHR Incentive Program) to support a key use case, giving patients an easy way to share their health data with researchers. EHR developers-including Allscripts, Athenahealth, Cerner, drchrono, Epic and McKesson-said they will embrace open specs including S4S APIs and FHIR to connect research apps to electronic health records software. Vendors will implement a "consistent, standards-based workflow," building on open specifications such as OAuth and HL7's FHIR protocol.

S4S goals include developing methods to facilitate individually-controlled clinical data donations to research, accelerate and guide the national ecosystem for patient-mediated data access through APIs thus allowing patients to access data via the application of their choice – giving patients more options to view, aggregate, and understand their health data and collecting information on individual participant preferences on alternative approaches for data donation.

FHIR bundles are one the distinguishing advantages of the FHIR protocol over proprietary web APIs. This talk focuses on the practical application of FHIR bundles to enable fast loading of bulk proprietary data in CSV format with complex inter-relations. The project was a collaboration between iNTERFACEWARE using the Iguana integration engine and Kainos with their Kainos Evolve telemedicine platform that supports FHIR based APIs. The project highlights the present real commercial value of FHIR even when interfacing with older healthcare IT technology.
