HL7 Version 3 Standard: Clinical Statement CMETs Release 1

DESCRIPTION

This standard is Retired; retained for historical reference at HL7 but withdrawn from ANSI 2022 June.

The Clinical Statement model is designed to be used within multiple HL7 Version 3 domain models. Clinical Statement is intended to facilitate the consistent design of communications that convey clinical information to meet specific use cases. In most cases Clinical Statement will be refined for use within the model using the Clinical Statement.

The Clinical Statement model intends to provide a pattern that can be used by various domains to propagate commonality in the core clinical act domain space, while allowing for controlled extensions for select participations.

We want to ensure that the Clinical Statement model covers in particular Pharmacy, Laboratory, Patient Care, Public Health, Clinical Genomics, and Allergies, while other domains will be incorporated over time.  The objective is not to express the very detailed operational modeling that is required to support these domain’s specific message requirements, particularly in the participation space.  Rather it is more focused on the core clinical act when used as context in other messages or “summary” documentation.  As this is a fine line, and consistency is required, the primary Work Groups participating in this effort are constantly balancing the need for general patterns and highly specialized/constraint models.

ALTERNATIVE NAMES

HL7 Version 3 Standard: Clinical Statement CMETs Release 1 may also go by the following names or acronyms:

"V3: Clinical Statement Pattern CMETs, R1", "V3: Clinical Statement Pattern, R1", Clinical Statement

TARGETS

  • HL7 Work Groups are the primary customers of this pattern
  • Standards Development Organizations (SDOs)
  • Health Care IT Vendors

BENEFITS

  • Facilitates the consistent design of communications that convey clinical information to meet specific use cases
  • Enables consistency across multiple domains representing clinical data

IMPLEMENTATIONS/CASE STUDIES

  • Domain models such as CDA R2, Clinical Genomics, Orders, Medication, Laboratory, Clinical Genomics, Family History, Patient Care Care Summary, Pharmacy, Observations, Blood Bank, Public Health Statement
  • Other HL7 V3 based clinical standards.

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

The Clinical Statement has its origins in two important pieces of work, the English National Programme for Information Technology (NPfIT) and the Clinical Statement section of the CDA R2 specification. NPfIT and CDA specific material have been removed, but the acknowledgement must be made at this point that the document, in its current form, is heavily reliant on the work these two groups have done.
