Mission

The ITS Work Group supports the HL7 mission through the development of Implementable Technology Specifications and Messaging Protocol guidelines (e.g. ebXML, Web Services, Messaging encoding specifications) to be used when implementing the HL7 information specifications.

Charter

Work Products and Contributions to HL7 Processes

The work group develops and maintains the normative specifications for Implementable Technology Specifications (e.g. XML) and Messaging Protocol guidelines (e.g. ebXML, Web services, MLLP).  The work group will also produce informative recommendations on application of XML across all of HL7's work products, coordinating the representation of documents, messages and other exchangeable payloads such as service exchange structures. The work group will support HL7 through education in the development, evolution, and use of XML specifications and recommendations. The work group will track the development of XML-related standards activities and establish liaison with groups whose work is relevant to the HL7 Mission. In addition, the work group will educate the healthcare community in general in the capabilities and utility of XML standards.

Formal Relationships With Other HL7 Groups

The work group will work with the Modeling & Methodology in an advisory capacity to refine the development framework used HL7.

The work group will work with Infrastructure and Messaging on development of encoding rules and practices for messages in both version 2 and version 3, and the production of Implementable Technology Specifications and Transport Protocol guidelines.

The work group will work with the Structured Document work group on the development of encoding rules and practices for documents.

The work group will work with the SOA work group to ensure the specifications are service enabled.

The work group will work with RIMBAA to ensure the transport and serialization mechanisms support the implementers of applications created with the RIM as the data model.

The work group will work with Tooling to ensure that HL7-sponsored tools enforce and adhere to ITS specifications.

Formal Relationship With Groups Outside of HL7
