Description | Develop a broad Clinical Genomics Domain Analysis Model, which also includes 'standards-independent' Domain Information Model. The scope of this DAM is aligned with the mission of the group: Create and promote its standards by enabling the communication between interested parties of the clinical and personal genomic data and family health history, which are required to support personalized medicine. The focus of clinical genomics work is the identification of an individual's genomic data and family health history, to better understand the underlying genetic factors contributing to disease and health, and the linking to relevant clinical information. Furthermore, facilitate the development of common standards for clinical and translational information management across a variety of organizations, including academic medical centers, hospitals and in-hospital testing labs, independent testing laboratories, and public data repositories and knowledge bases serving as references to clinical genetics/genomics. These standards may be useful for clinical trials and research as well, especially when integrating with complementary clinical data. |

Project Need | This Clinical Genomics (CG) project replaces project (#705), Named "HL7 CG-omics Domain Analysis Model" that will be withdrawn. In the recent ballot cycle, we balloted two documents: a Clinical Sequencing DAM and a CG Domain Information Model. We have decided to terminate and/or complete these two projects and consolidate them into one effort - a CG DAM. With regard to the CG DIM effort, the need stems from the following rationale: Throughout the past decade, the HL7 Clinical Genomics Work Group has been developing various artifacts (e.g., informative, DSTU and normative specifications), domain analysis models, storyboards, etc. The approved/trialed/proposed specifications are of different HL7 flavors, i.e., v3, v2, CDA and recently FHIR. These artifacts share some common view of clinical genomic data, but lack semantic alignment at the modeling level. Therefore, it is crucial to have agreed-upon Clinical Genomics Domain Information Model(s) (CG DIMs), which have the following functions: - The CG DIMs reflect the results of the Domain Analysis Model efforts - The CG DIMs serve as a single source of semantics with which all standard specifications are aligned - The CG DIMs are represented in an HL7 standards-independent format, e.g., plain UML - The CG DIMs are Universal and do not mandate binding to specific vocabularies (these bindings could be present in realm-specific versions of the actual standard specifications) Acknowledging the value of the current Clinical Genomic standards, the DAM and the DIM will reflect and support these use cases and standards. However, the DIM/DAM will extend these to support additional use cases and emerging requirements. The Clinical Genomics DAM/DIM will have regular updated major and minor releases to meet the requirements of this emerging field. As always, we will work to remain backwards compatible. |
