HL7 training programs provide knowledge and support to guide the healthcare industry through successful implementation of HL7 standards. HL7 offers on-site tutorials and workshops that can be customized to meet specific needs. HL7 training is also available at Working Group Meetings and Educational Summits.

ON-SITE TRAINING OFFERED BY HL7

HL7 can bring training to you! Train your employees on HL7 at your facility and choose the curriculum from our most popular workshops and tutorials. We provide qualified, knowledgeable faculty; you provide the students. In these one or two day workshops, up to 40 employees will learn how to implement HL7 standards in your organization. This official HL7-produced training is convenient and affordable. You may choose a standard one or two day package or customize your program by choosing from any of the tutorials currently offered by HL7 to best suit your organization's needs. On-site Training

The following fees shall apply for on-site training:

  • $5,500/per day
  • Associated travel/living expenses for faculty

Prepayment of 50% of all expected fees (excluding expenses) shall be paid to HL7 at least 7 days before the 1st day of training. The remaining fees shall be payable to HL7 within 10 days of receipt of the invoice from HL7.

On-site Certification Testing

The following fees shall apply to on-site testing:

  • Proctor fee of $500 (plus expenses)
  • Testing fee per person: member $145; non-member $215

Prepayment is required 7 days prior to the test date. No refunds will be given; however, substitutions may be made up until the day of the test.

Several of our most requested trainings are:

  • 1 or 2 day Introduction to HL7 Version 2.x and Control Specialist Certification Review, followed by the V2.7 Certification Exam
  • 1 or 2 day Introduction to HL7 Version 3, Parts 1 & 2

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that organizations planning to offer the certification test as part of their on-site training distribute the appropriate study materials in advance of the test date to individuals planning to take the certification test as the courses offered during on-site training will most likely not be sufficient to pass the test.

Version 2

HL7's Version 2 Introductory Tutorial
This tutorial introduces students to HL7 and the basic concepts of Version 2. It provides an overview of the HL7 organization and discusses the standard's fundamental chapters: Control and Patient Administration. The second part of this tutorial provides students with an overview of the Version 2 Orders and Observations messages, major concepts, and a sampling of the type of information that can be communicated using these messages.
Version 2.7 Control Specialist Certification Review
This course reviews the message definition as well as processing rules and data type definitions of the HL7 Version 2.7 Standard. Upon completion of this tutorial, students will be better prepared to take the HL7 V2.7 Control Specialist Certification Exam. Note that students are also expected to prepare for the exam by previous study of Chapter 2 (Control) and Chapter 2A (Data Types) of the HL7 Version 2.7 Standard. Attending the HL7 Version 2 Introductory Tutorial is also recommended.

Version 3

Introduction to Version 3, Part 1: Fundamentals

Introduction to Version 3 is a rigorous introduction to HL7's newly emerging standard. Included in the class is:

  • General rationale for Version 3
  • Explanation of Version 3's two key concepts: messaging and documents (CDA®)
  • Overview of the Version 3 publication (ballot and standard)
  • Essential concepts and terminology necessary to understand the static models of Version 3 used for both messages and documents.
Introduction to Version 3, Part 2: Messaging

Health Level Seven is famous as a provider of messaging standards. That is, providing the standard format and interaction specifications required for two disparate health care systems to communicate at the application level. This class builds on the morning Versions 3 introduction class by focusing on how messaging is addressed with the Version 3 standard. It reviews and expands on how Version 3 static models are used to represent messages. The Version 3 dynamic model, which is related to the interactions between systems, is introduced. It explains how message sets are documented within the standard. Finally, it explores how a simple message is wrapped, transmitted, and acknowledged.

Note that the class is based on the latest Version 3 ballot material. The latest Version 3 ballot publication can be accessed and downloaded from the V3 Ballot Site. Students may be interested in reviewing or downloading the ballot prior to class.

Clinical Document Architecture (CDA®)

Clinical Document Architecture (CDA®) Introductory Tutorial
The Clinical Document Architecture is HL7's specification for standards-based exchange of clinical documents. CDA® is based on the concept of scalable, incremental interoperability and uses Extensible Markup Language (XML), the HL7 Reference Information Model (RIM), and controlled terminology for structure and semantics. This tutorial presents the business case for CDA®, its primary design principles, and an overview of the technical specification. The session describes CDA® projects in the United States, Europe and Asia/Pacific; the tools available for CDA® creation, management and distribution; and current work on CDA® summary documents, (Continuity of Care Document (CCD®)); other common document types including the History & Physical, Discharge Summary and Consult Note; and CDA® for Reporting, including the proposed CDA-based Healthcare Associated Infection Report for the National Health Safety Network.
Clinical Document Architecture (CDA®) Advanced Tutorial
CDA® implementation requires understanding the CDA® refinement of the RIM (the CDA® RMIM), the Version 3 data types and how these combine with controlled vocabularies to form “clinical statements.” This tutorial reviews the principles of semantic interoperability with CDA® and how these are reflected in the CDA® model and implemented in the CDA® schema. It reviews the CDA® RMIM, schema and data types. In addition, the tutorial gives a detailed walkthrough of samples of CDA® documents, coded using Clinical Statements.
CDA® Certification Test Preparation
This course is designed to better prepare students for taking the CDA® Certification Exam. Participants are encouraged to carefully read the CDA® Release 2.0 Standard as well possessing basic knowledge of Version 3. Attending the CDA® Introductory and Advanced tutorials is also recommended.

ON-SITE CERTIFICATION TESTING

HL7 certification is fast becoming a requirement in today's competitive healthcare market. Advance the knowledge of your employees through this program designed to standardize the level of HL7 knowledge represented by systems integrators, consultants and application vendor organizations. Three certification tests are now offered: HL7's V2.7 Control Chapter, CDA® Release 2.0 and the Version 3 RIM. Each exam includes 70 multiple-choice questions. To achieve certification, a score of 70% or higher is required for V2.7 and the V3 RIM, and a score of 84% or higher is required for certification to the CDA® Release 2. HL7 FUNDAMENTALS COURSE

This course is directed towards application developers, software engineers, care providers, software vendors, consultants in information technology and anyone who is interested in acquiring tools that will enable them to properly handle the implementation of healthcare information standards. As this is a virtual course, students need to know how to navigate a web site in order to access the course resources. The goal of this course is to introduce the key concepts of electronic messaging interoperability in the health care arena. While this course will include material that is helpful in preparing for the certification exam, it is most likely not sufficient to pass the exam. The eLearning course is estimated to take about 50 hours to complete over 14 weeks or about 2-4 hours per week.
