HL7 Version 3 Standard: Pharmacy: Medication Dispense and Supply Event, R2

DESCRIPTION

The Medication Dispense and Supply Event topic contains interactions that can be used to exchange information regarding the processing of prescriptions, usually by a pharmacy, including the pick-up of prescribed medication by the patient or a representative. It also covers cases where medication is sold ‘over the counter’ (i.e. not based on a prescription), but still needs to be recorded in a patient’s medical record. Finally, it supports information exchange for bulk supplies of medication (not tied to a specific patient).

This revision of the initial topic extends existing messaging for Dispense and Supply to cover Institutional settings. Since the 1st normative ballot of January 2013, numerous editorial and formatting issues have been addressed, walkthroughs were updated, and extraneous diagram fixes, broken links, and other database-related corrections were made.

Release 1 of this standard is based on community use cases (i.e. where the dispense occurs by a community pharmacy, directly to the patient or a representative). Coverage of institutional use cases is intended for a future release.
