DESCRIPTION

This project developed an implementation guide constraining FHIR STU 3. The implementation guide supports electronic submission of HAI data to the National Healthcare Safety Network. CDC provided NHSN developers, vocabulary experts and FHIR experts to support this project. SDWG reviewed the design and draft specification before ballot.

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

This implementation guide mirrors the CDA HAI IG. Following an implementation pilot in July 2007, the first CDA release was published in 2008. The pilot was reviewed by the Structured Documents Working Group (SDWG), which is the sponsor of this guide within HL7; the stakeholders in HAI exchange; the NHSN, which is the overall sponsor of the activity; and the software vendors whose systems today use the specification for NHSN reporting. Subsequent development cycles have extended the specification to additional report types, following the same review processes. This development is now extended to cover FHIR IGs.
