HL7 Version 2 Implementation Guide: Laboratory Test Compendium Framework, Release 1

DESCRIPTION

The Version 2 Implementation Guide: Laboratory Test Compendium Framework, Release 1 is a master file framework Implementation Guide (IG) for the electronic delivery of a laboratory’s Directory of Service (eDOS) to all providers that order lab work including EHRs, HLIS, and others. This provides the mechanisms to provide an initial Directory of Services and periodic updates, leveraging the HL7 standard and electronic transmissions. This Implementation Guide defines the orderable tests for a laboratory, the components, specimen information and description of what is provided; this may include information needed from the patient, when it has an impact on the results of the test, for example, specimen volume, fasting information, date of birth and last menstrual period.

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

The Laboratory Test Compendium Framework contains the format to deliver the laboratory order codes for systems that support the electronic laboratory ordering and/or resulting functionality. It was developed jointly with many members of the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA). After completing the Implementation Guide, it was placed on the ACLA web page (http://www.clinical-labs.org/)  and made available for public comment for 45 days beginning in January 2010 (The press release announcement can be found at http://www.clinical-labs.org/documents/PressReleaseITFramework.pdf ). After updating the document based on the public comments, ACLA officially turned over the rights to the document to HL7 on May 6, 2010 (http://www.clinical-labs.org/documents/ACLAlettertoHL7reeDOS.pdf ) to be balloted in September 2010.

NOTE: This Implementation Guide (IG) has been updated in a new “Release 2” Implementation Guide, to be compatible with both the Lab Order Interface (LOI) and Laboratory Result Interface (LRI) IImplementation Guides developed under sponsorship of the Office of National Coordinator (ONC) Standards and Interoperability (S&I) Framework.
