HL7 Version 3 Standard: Model Interchange Format, Release 1
The HL7 Version 3 Specification: Model Interchange Format (MIF), Release 1 defines the content of the artifacts used by HL7, HL7 affiliates and implementers in the creation and implementation of HL7 v3 specifications, including messages, documents and services. It provides a detailed meta-model with detailed descriptions of each of these artifacts and their relationships. It also defines a syntax by which HL7 artifacts can be exchanged in a computable manner. The MIF is updated and balloted regularly as HL7 methodology evolves.
HL7 Version 3 Standard: Model Interchange Format, Release 1 may also go by the following names or acronyms:
- HL7 standards designers
- HL7 standards implementers
- Helps ensure consistency and quality of HL7 artifacts
- Allows HL7 artifacts to be shared between tools and encourages development of HL7-enabled tools
- Used in HL7 development & publication tools including RMIM Designer, v3-generator, publication tooling, Static Model Designer and others.
HL7 has developed and maintained a set of schemas called the Model Interchange Format (MIF) since 2002. This set of schemas defines the syntax for HL7 artifact exchange and is broadly used as a persistence and exchange syntax by HL7 tools. The schemas also include rigorous documentation defining each property of every type of artifact HL7 develops and maintains. In 2011, a number of HL7 members have been working with the OMG to document the underlying requirements that justify each element in the MIF. The MIF has been subject to peer review in the past and is maintained by the tooling committee via a formal process managed through GForge. The 'in use' portions of the MIF were published together with its supporting requirements as an Informative Standard as both an exchange syntax and as a formal representation of HL7's metamodel.
