What is a Working Group Meeting?

HL7 International Working Group Meetings (WGMs) are held three times per year at varying locations and serve two important purposes:

  1. Provide the HL7 International work groups the opportunity to meet in person and work on standards, as well as to network with industry leaders from around the world.
  2. Offer an invaluable educational resource for the healthcare IT community.

Standards Development

HL7 International has more than 40 work groups dedicated to specialized areas of interest such as Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Infrastructure, Mobile Health and Electronic Health Records. These work groups are directly responsible for the content of standards and spend much of their time at WGMs hard at work on standards development. Attending a WGM is a great way to learn about a particular area, and everyone attending a WGM is invited to any of the work group meetings.

Educational Sessions

Educational sessions will cover a full range of topics including our most recent standard Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR), Mapping V2 and CDA to FHIR and some additional general topics.

Student Academy

The September Working Group Meeting features a brand new event just for students. All day on Monday, students will be able to participate in a schedule tailored just for their needs. The schedule includes:

  • Orientation for First Time Attendees (early pre-meeting)
  • Plenary meeting (Monday AM)
  • Introductory tutorial on Monday afternoon, with opportunity to select from:
    • Introduction to HL7 standards for interoperability (recommended for students)
    • Introduction to FHIR Shorthand
    • HAPI FHIR

HL7 FHIR Connectathon

HL7 FHIR Connectathons are a two-day event of hands-on FHIR development and testing held in conjunction with Working Group Meetings. This event provides a great opportunity for implementers and developers to gain hands-on experience developing FHIR-based solutions by participating in one of many available tracks.
