Important Update Regarding HL7 May WGM

The international response to COVID-19 is rapidly evolving, even hour by hour. The HL7 International Board has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the May Working Group Meeting (WGM) and Payer Summit following guidance of the WHO and recommendations from the CDC.

Sponsors and those who registered and paid for these events will be issued a full refund, and questions can be directed to meetings@hl7.org. Decisions to convene future in-person meetings will be made as developments evolve and we will keep you updated.

Continuing Work, Virtual Connectathon & Ballot

While the WGM is cancelled, our important work will continue. Since connectathons are so critical to developing and testing our standards, the board has asked the FHIR Management Group to prepare plans for a virtual connectathon. Details will be shared in a future announcement.

The May 2020 ballot will proceed as planned. To support ballot reconciliation, HL7 will be supporting additional conference calls and we're exploring an alternative conference call service offering more features with increased reliability.

Additionally, we will continue to support the HL7 community by continuing to enhance our tooling platforms, providing online education opportunities and looking for other opportunities to support work groups. We are also maintaining our collaborations with partner organizations including IHE, HIMSS, NCQA and ONC, as well as facilitating the work of FHIR Accelerators.

Lastly, on behalf of the board, we want to convey our confidence in the resilience of the HL7 community as we weather these unprecedented times together. We urge you to follow the guidance of your local and national health authorities to advance our collective efforts to protect public health.

What is a Working Group Meeting?

HL7 International Working Group Meetings (WGMs) are held three times per year at varying locations and serve two important purposes:

  1. Provide the HL7 International work groups the opportunity to meet in person and work on standards, as well as to network with industry leaders from around the world.
  2. Offer an invaluable educational resource for the healthcare IT community.

Standards Development

HL7 International has more than 40 work groups dedicated to specialized areas of interest such as Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Infrastructure, Mobile Health and Electronic Health Records. These work groups are directly responsible for the content of standards and spend much of their time at WGMs hard at work on standards development. Attending a WGM is a great way to learn about a particular area, and everyone attending a WGM is invited to any of the work group meetings.

Educational Sessions

Educational sessions will cover a full range of HL7-specific topics such as Version 2.x Implementation, Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) and the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA®), among others. Sessions also branch out to cover general interest industry topics such as Electronic Health Records, Interoperability, Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) and Vocabulary Terminology.

HL7 FHIR Connectathon

FHIR Connectathons are a two-day event of hands-on FHIR development and testing held in conjunction with Working Group Meetings. This event provides a great opportunity for implementers and developers to gain hands-on experience developing FHIR-based solutions by participating in one of many available tracks. To learn more about the FHIR Connectathon, visit the HL7 FHIR Connectathon 24 page.

C-CDA Implementation-A-Thon at the FHIR Connectathon

The HL7 FHIR Connectathon now includes a new C-CDA Implementation-A-Thon (C-CDA IAT) track. The C-CDA IAT track helps implementers work to reduce inconsistencies in HL7 Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) implementations across the healthcare industry. Attendees will collaborate on clarifying C-CDA document creation questions as well as engage in exploratory sessions designed to bring clarity to less defined or emerging data representation in C-CDA. To learn more about the C-CDA IAT, visit confluence.hl7.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=5996832

HL7 FHIR Experience — A Hands-On Workshop

Learn how to implement HL7 FHIR at this two-day, hands-on FHIR workshop. The program blends theory with hands-on activities so that students are able to apply what they learn throughout the experience.

The first day is devoted to evaluating and applying the base FHIR standards through hands-on interaction with FHIR servers. The second day focuses on reviewing and utilizing the FHIR implementation guides. Students will work with the US Core (Argonaut) and Provider Directory Implementation Guides. Learn from our expert faculty:

Eric Hass, DVM, MS: HL7 FHIR Core Team; President and CEO, Health eData, Inc.
Simone Heckmann: Dipl. Inform. Med.; Chair, HL7 Germany's Technical Committee on FHIR; Board Member, HL7 Germany; CTO, Gefyra GmbH; CEO, Health-Comm GmbH
Rik Smithies: Technical Chair, HL7 UK; Independent Consultant, NProgram Ltd.
