XML  & PRA Introductory Sessions for Cleveland Spring Working Group Meeting. (05/22/2000)

  Bullet The HL7 Patient Record Architecture (PRA) Proposal. The HL7 Patient Record Proposal describes a method in which electronic healthcare records (EHR) can be created, exchanged, and processed using XML. This draft is the product of the Kona Editorial Group (KEG) under charter from the HL7 SGML/XML SIG. It was originally presented at the 1998 Plenary meeting in San Diego (see 9/98 PRA.) Linked documents include the current draft of the Level One architectural DTD and the header DTD. A ballot proposal package will be presented to the SIG and, if approved, to the TSC at the 1999 plenary meeting in Atlanta.

NOTE: The PRA framework document was last updated on August 3, 1999. This document and the related DTDs will continue to undergo frequent revision between now and the plenary sessions. Portions of this document have been reviewed by the KEG and represent KEG concensus; other portions, specifically the Part II, Header and articulation of goals for Levels 2 & 3 have not undergone the full KEG concensus process.  Nevertheless, this document represents considerable refinement over previous drafts.

  BulletThe Kona Architecture Proposal. [This proposal is outdated. A draft of the first part of a newer version is now known as the HL7 Patient Record Proposal]. The Kona Proposal describes a method in which electronic healthcare records (EHR) can be created, exchanged, and processed using SGML, Standard Generalized Markup Language, ISO 8879:1986.

BulletBasic SGML. An introduction. Anyone who knows a little about tagging (such as minimal HTML concepts) should find this to be an easy introduction.
BulletA Gentle Introduction to SGML. A very nice 24-page introduction to the technical aspects of SGML, prepared by the Text Encoding Initiative. Has enough content to allow one to learn to create DTDs and associated documents.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The HL7 XML TC is a Technical Committee of HL7 formed to create standards for the use of markup languages, such as XML, in all domains of health care. The XML standards will comply with the W3C XML 1.0 Recommendation and will be in conformance with the HL7 RIM. Participation is open to all parties.

CHARTER:

  1. Our Mission statement will guide the primary objectives:
  2. To create and coordinate the development of a comprehensive document architecture for health care.
  3. To educate the healthcare community in the capabilities and utility of XML-based information.
  4. To develop, coordinate, and maintain a framework for interoperable Document Type Definitions (DTDs) and XML Schemas for use in health care and health care standards including HL7.
  5. To coordinate and cooperate with other XML initiatives where appropriate.
  6. To enable and promote the use of these standards and to make the standard as widely available as possible.
  7. To represent healthcare in XML standards activities/evolution.
  8. To promote longevity of all information encoded according to these guidelines.
  9. To ensure that the document architecture standards comply with and be in conformance with HL7.
