Mission
The Patient Safety Work Group (PSWG) supports the HL7 mission to create and promote HL7 standards by developing standard specifications (messages, CDAs, implementation guides, patient safety terminologies) and decision support structures for patient safety to facilitate reporting, triggering, investigating, and analyzing information relevant to patient safety.
PSWG works with other work groups and through HL7 internal organizational structures to ensure that specification developers give due consideration to patient safety issues and incorporate appropriate guidance for implementers.
PSWG develops guidance and terminology to support the use of HL7 v3 and subsequent versions of standards for relevant stakeholders.
Charter
Work Products and Contributions to HL7 Processes
PSWG provides a joint forum for members from relevant work groups concerned with messages that might (by their development or implementation) impact the safety of patients. PWSG produces informative, draft and normative standards for reporting, managing, and responding to adverse events, product problems, and patient safety concerns and related information. PSWG coordinates and cooperates with other groups to promote the reduction or prevention of patient safety incidents via the effective use of properly designed and implemented HL7 standards.

Formal Relationship With Groups Outside of HL7
PWSG may have formal relationships with groups outside of HL7, such as, ISO TC215 Work Group 6, under the Joint Initiative on SDO Global Health Informatics Standardization. These liaisons depend on the approval of the HL7 Board in accordance with its Policy and Procedures. PSWG maintains informal links with a variety of national and international organizations that are active in the patient safety domain.
